featured vendor | custom cakes by denise

I am so blessed to be surrounded by talented artists - & I was thinking about that when I decided I'd like to feature these special people on the blog.

My first ever featured vendor is Custom Cakes by Denise. Denise made this gorgeous cake for the 2nd Annual Masquerade Ball in May. The entire thing (minus the feathers) was edible.

10 ways a consultant can help

1. Listening to your ideas, then suggesting what works for your style and budget.

2. Helping out with just one or two specific tasks, if that's all you need - such as scouting reception sites, tracking invitations or finding a minister.

3. Recommending vendors (florists, bakers) who will serve your needs best.

4. Acting as the contact person between you and all vendors, from the contract signing to the I do's.

5. Getting great deals from vendors whom she regularly works. Her relationships may mean price breaks.

6. Overseeing your wedding day. She'll manage the timeline, make sure every detail is in place (the tent is up, the favors are distributed), and handle emergencies so you can relax.

7. Carrying an emergency kit with safety pins, asprin and winter.

8. Mediating if things get tense between you and your mom or you and vendor.

9. Helping you get your legal documents (birth certificates, marriage license) in order.

10. Arranging a ride to take you to your wedding-night hotel or to the airport.

giving back | stand out prom 2010

I am going to attempt to fit this into one giant blog post. Here goes:

I was so lucky to be apart of 2 great community groups this past Spring: the annual Masquerade Ball (a post on that later...) & the Stand Out Prom Scholarship Program.

Stand Out Prom is the brain child of my friend, photographer Christy Pelland. She wanted to be able to support other young women who were looking to go into the field of creative arts post-high school. She spent an evening coming up with a logo, a mission statement, an application & "the swag." The recipient would receive a prom photoshoot & a graduation party.

The first year was so successful that Christy wanted to expand the next year. In 2010, the Stand Out Prom recipient received the prom photoshoot, a gradation party & a $2000 scholarship. I was so blessed to be apart of the entire process, including the incredible fundraisers that were held to raise money for the scholarship.

The first fundraiser took place in April 2010 at Che'mel Salon in Tacoma. Glam Night was an opportunity for women to receive total hair & make-up pampering by the professionals at Che'mel Salon, wine & dine on food and drinks provided by The Mandolin Cafe & Vino Aquino, and participate in a photoshoot by Christy Pelland of C. Pelland Photography & Julie Watts of Julie Watts Photo.

The Stand Out Prom team at the end of a long & perfect fundraiser!

The next step was to sort through all of the applications we received from Pierce County high school seniors. We read through applications for hours & narrowed down our top 4.

Interviews were held at the Mandolin Cafe in Tacoma. We asked the finalists to bring in a portfolio of their work. We had a fashion designer, a graphic designers, a poet & a lighting designer. It was inspiring for me to be surrounded by young women who had talent & passion and were pursuing their dreams.


Deliberations ensued but we all agreed the Kayleigha Holten had everything that Stand Out Prom stood for. Kayleigha was a senior at Emerald Ridge High School (my alma mater - Class of 2004!) and she had been apart of their "tech crew" for the past 3 years. Her essay was incredible & I would like to share it with you.

Light exposes things in the theater. It storms the stage, a strobe of lightning
shadowing a haunted house. It sets the scene, uncomfortable colors squirming beneath a discordant Renter. It constructs a jail, blue bars crying softly into the bloody red of a Birmingham cell. I decide.

As resident lighting designer at Emerald Ridge High School, performing technical tasks both as a volunteer and a school district employee, I’ve made a career out of backstage obscurity. In the summer before my sophomore year a close friend involved in the theatre department at Emerald Ridge invited me to join the Technical Crew. Of course, I possessed a dearth of knowledge regarding lighting consoles, dimmers, and the fancy lamps that can’t be touched by human hands. Something twisted into a back flip in the region of my stomach when, less than a month after I’d begun my technical career, my friend informed me of my assignation to light board
operations for the fall play. I could barely turn the light board on, let alone program and operate the beast. But one hundred and eighty three time-sensitive light cues later, as I watched the fading frosted box of light caress the innocent man lying dead upon the stage, I became conscious for the first time of a dramatic undertone that would become the intense focus of my high school endeavors.

Just as actors craft expressions, I craft moods. Should no change in lighting hurl Les Miserables’ Jean Valjean from the smokey blues of the Toulon prison into the grey, impoverished streets of Paris or the dank greenish hue of the sewers below, he might as well remain forever in captivity, lacking the means to convey his vehemence upon the stage. Such tragedy haunts the designer’s soul. Without soul in theatre, there is nothing, an emptiness as stark as a naked script not yet clothed in its robe of annotations and lighting cues.

Immediately following the enlightening fall play experience, I immersed myself in the technical field with enthusiasm. I adapted a more professional outlook on my dealings in the theatre, which bled into other aspects of my life; into my three-year tenure as an elected class officer, into my seasons as a varsity track and cross country athlete, into my amalgam of community service hours and resultant United Way community service letters. My passion for theatre prepared me for adulthood.

My first business letter inquired into the possibility of completing an internship at the Tacoma Musical Playhouse, where I undertook one hundred and ninety-five unpaid hours of lighting and set design. During my time at the community theatre I discovered the lighting manual for the board at my high school and invested hours learning to program subroutines, effects, and complex lighting cues previously inaccessible to members of the Emerald Ridge Technical Crew.

The internship led to my continuing seasonal employment as lighting designer for Tacoma Musical Playhouse Kids’ Camp productions. I have been able to give back to my community through the four hundred plus hours I donate each year for the design and operation of school events in the auditorium. I aid in lighting local elementary schools’ dramatic enterprises and participate in the high school Martin Luther King, Jr. assembly, which for the past two years I have directed. This year I wrote the script, blocked the scenes (including a Civil War reenactment complete with fog machines and time-period guns), and choreographed the final musical number. However, the accomplishment of which I am most proud is the lighting and set design for Les Miserables: School Edition.

Painfully aware that the board housed in the Emerald Ridge tech booth could not possibly suffice for perhaps the largest production ever undertaken by the Puyallup School District, I employed the writing experience gained in my other professional endeavors to appeal to local community members for the funding to purchase the necessary equipment. Although unable to purchase a new board, I did procure enough donations to allow its rental.

I launched into my customary eighteen hour days, arriving at school in the dark at six in the morning and often not leaving until the nighttime clock chimed midnight. I focused lights, built a rotating barricade, telescoping lamp posts and a flyable bridge, and painted stones upon the garden wall. Everything had to be perfect.When Les Miserables opened, an elderly man approached me after the first Saturday show to share his opinion that he had ‘seen things on that stage that had never before been conceived,’ and that credit for the astounding look of the show belonged to me. That night I shed my first tears of joy. As a graduating senior, I hope to instill that same joy into the underclassmen I am training to assume lighting duties when I head off to major in lighting design at the Boston University, College of Fine Arts.

I will miss the auditorium which first shrouded me in its comfortable darkness, and then thrust me into full view as last year’s “Techie of the Year,” and earned my school-wide reputation as the “lighting girl who can do anything.” The relationships I have formed through my thespian pursuits will long outlive the transience of their founding productions. Because of theatre, I know, and I am known in, my community. Through the endeavor to procure a better light board I reached outside school boundaries to establish myself in the Puyallup community. In my work on the Martin Luther King, Jr. assembly I developed a relationship with my principal, choir director, office staff, and numerous adults in my high school community. As lighting designer, I earned citizenship in the dramatic world of the acting community.

Life to me is art and the world an empty canvas. I live to create, and create to live. I aspire to reveal the power and beauty of the world to those who view my work, and inspire them to see the artistry in life. In this way, I stand out.

Our next step was to announce to Kayleigha that she would be receiving the ultimate prom experience + a $2,000 scholarship to Boston University. We spent some time gathering a "swag bag" for Kayleigha - which she later emailed us saying that she felt like Mary Poppins pulling things out of the bag because it seemed to be never ending!

We determined that it would be fun to surprise her at Les Miserables play practice at Emerald Ridge High School in front of her closest peers. We gathered at a local coffee shop, assembled the swag bag, & headed off to Emerald Ridge.






Glam Night was such a success & there was such a demand for a 2nd one, that we almost immediately began plans for Glam Night II. This time we coincided the event with the Star Chef's banquet which was Masquerade themed. Food was donated by Ram International Catering.






As apart of Kayleigha's winnings, Christy put together a Victorian-themed photoshot on Prom Day.



& Finally - The 1920's graduation party, thrown by Tammi at TLB Events & hosted by Vixen's in Tacoma. Unfortunately, I had just run in the Rock N Roll Seattle Half Marathon that morning, then jetted over to a bridal shower & then my legs CRASHED for the night, so I did not attend the fabulous looking event.

obsession | ModCloth

Okay ladies. I am officially obsessed with ModCloth & I have included 4 reasons below why you should be too. I love the retro elegance of the clothing on this site. They are all by independent designers so there is a very limited quantity of each garment. I am in hearts with the dresses & find myself daily looking at all of the new inventory (how many websites do you know that adds new merchandise every single day?!).

This dress is new as of yesterday & I think it would be a perfect rehearsal dinner dress. It's light, semi-formal & the off-white color says "I am the Bride but I'm saving the bright white for the big day." Another trend I am noticing is the bride wearing white to her bachelorette party while her girls wear a different color (ie...black). I could dance all night in this dress!



Teal, aqua, Tiffany blue is a hot color for spring/summer weddings. This dress is one that your bridesmaids will love to wear on your wedding day - and date night - and any other occasion they can dream up!



Or how about this short, darker number for your wedding party? I picture this dress in an evening affair at a local winery.

And finally ... let's be honest ... it took me about 4 minutes to decide that this dress had to be mine. I'm not sure what I will wear it for yet. But it sure looks good in my closet for now!

new beginnings

Hi friends.

If you look back, you'll notice that I was becoming a good little blogger. If there is something that I love to do, it is scouring through amazing event decor and sharing my finds.

The idea of truly starting my own event company started last October. I had a logo designed by the amazing Jessie Rau of Jessabelle Rau Artworks & started writing a business plan. I also snagged my first client, who just happened to be Mrs. Rau herself (her wedding on July 17th was truly beautiful).

However, I was employed full time in a law firm & I didn't think that I would ever make Meghan Swanlund Events more than just a part time gig. But then in June, I lost my job at the firm and quickly had to make a decision about my life & the direction it was taking. We have a brand new home & I recently purchased my first "grown up" car. I either needed to find a job in a field that I wasn't keen on ... or I would need to take something that I love and am passionate about & take it to the next step.

So here we are. Meghan Swanlund Event Design & Management is officially a full-time career.

Right now I am gathering images from events that I have been working on, including a Masquerade Ball, the marriage of two beautiful people & a 4th of July Soiree. I invite you to frequent this blog. I have ideas, inspirations & beautiful events to share with you.

& if you or someone you know is planning a wedding, a fundraiser, a corporate gathering or a special event of any sort, I will thrive off of your referrals.

breaking news | new jersey gets it wrong

new jersey voted to defeat a gay-marriage bill yesterday. so disappointing.

on the other hand ... portugal gets it right & parliament approves gay marriage. according to the article, gay marriage is currently permitted in belgium, the netherlands, spain, sweden and norway. canada, south africa and six US states also permit it.

obsession | wedding expos

i love wedding expos. yesterday i went with a friend to the tacoma wedding expo at the tacoma dome. it was much smaller than the one i have been to in seattle..but still had some fabulous vendors. i particularily enjoy looking at other event coordinators booths. they inspire me for future events - but i also enjoy seeing how i might do things differently.

i came across a few vendors that i had never heard of but am so excited to explore and partner with. i will be sure to keep you updated with some of my favorites as i spend time with them.

unfortunately, i will not be in town for the seattle wedding show but it is one of my favorites & if you have a chance to go, i suggest you do --- & take a camera because there are hundreds of ideas.
